Apeksha Hospital: PET scan services disrupted over payment dispute

12 Nov 2023 | – By Maheesha Mudugamuwa

The PET scan machine at the Apeksha Hospital in Maharagama faces operational disruptions once again, attributed to a payment issue with the local agent of the fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) supplier who is demanding biweekly payments, The Sunday Morning learns.

The hospital claims that the local agent insists on a payment of Rs. 2 million every two weeks, while the Treasury only releases funds for medicine purchases for bills that are two months old.

Apeksha Hospital Director Dr. Aruna Jayasekara expressed concern over this irregular demand, emphasising that standard billing procedures involved settling payments within a two-month timeframe.

The matter has been reported to the relevant authorities.

Typically conducting around 10 PET scans weekly at its Maharagama facility, the hospital’s inability to secure the necessary FDG substance has resulted in the postponement of scheduled PET scans. Despite this setback, a considerable number of patients are awaiting their turn for PET scans, it is learnt.

A PET scan, or Positron Emission Tomography, is a nuclear medicine imaging test involving the injection of a small amount of liquid radioactive material into the body. This procedure aids in diagnosing various diseases, including cancers, brain disorders, and heart disease.

The FDG substance, a crucial element in PET scans, comes at a significant cost, with approximately 10 vials amounting to nearly Rs. 1.2 million. The hospital’s weekly requirement is about 10 vials.

The FDG, upon injection, emits gamma rays detected by the PET scanner, generating detailed images illustrating the functioning of tissues and organs.

Although the current demand for consultant-suggested PET scans does not create an extensive waiting list, the delay is causing inconvenience for patients.
