LG Polls process: EC TO MONITOR GOVERNMENT STATEMENTS

The Election Commission (EC) stated that it is monitoring statements made by politicians including Government representatives during the Local Government (LG) Elections campaign that may hinder a free and fair Elections process, and would take action accordingly.

The LG Elections are to be held on 6 May 2025.

Speaking to The Daily Morning, the EC Chairperson, R.M.A.L. Rathnayake said that a dedicated unit has been established within the EC to look into Elections-related complaints including incidents of public property being misused. "Our officers are looking into complaints. In addition, officers have also been deployed at the District Level."

Referring to various statements made by politicians during election campaign activities that may affect a free and fair election process, he said: "We see that certain politicians including Government representatives are making various inappropriate statements on political stages. We will be monitoring such statements and taking appropriate action."

The LG institutions for which representatives are to be elected on 6 May include 28 Municipal Councils (MCs), 36 Urban Councils (UCs) and 272 Pradeshiya Sabhas (PSs). The Kalmunai MC and the Dehiattakandiya PS (the Ampara District), the Mannar PS (Mannar District), the Poonakary PS (the Kilinochchi District), and the Elpitiya PS (the Galle District) are excluded from the Elections.
