- Notes some groups fishing in the troubled waters of Tamil politics
Claiming that certain groups that are working against the Tamil community are benefitted through certain differences and disagreements among the Parliamentarians representing the said community, Thamil Makkal Thesiya Kuttani (TMTK) MP, C.V. Wigneswaran endorsed the establishment of a caucus of Tamil MPs, as suggested by Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Mano Ganesan.
Ganesan, who is also the Leader of the Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA), had recently proposed the establishment of a Tamil MPs' caucus in Parliament to Tamil political party leaders.
Commenting on the said proposal, Wigneswaran told The Daily Morning that it is very important for Tamil MPs to come together and speak up for the issues faced by the Tamil community, particularly in the Northern and Eastern Provinces, and the upcountry areas. "I have not seen the letter that Ganesan had sent us, but the need for us to get together is there. There are lots of things happening against the Tamil community. When we (Tamil MPs) are having differences, certain parties that are working against us are benefitted," he said.
Ganesan had recently proposed the establishment of a Tamil MPs’ caucus in Parliament to Tamil party leaders. He had written to the Illankai Thamil Arasu Katchchi President Mavai Senathirajah, the Tamil Eelam Liberation Organisation Leader and MP Selvam Adaikkalanathan, the People’s Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam Leader and MP Dharmalingam Siddharthan and Wigneswaran regarding his proposal. Ganesan also said that his colleagues in the TPA, MPs Palani Thigambaram and V. Radhakrishnan are in favour of the establishment of such a caucus.
President and Minister of National Policies Ranil Wickremesinghe has been pledging to resolve the issues faced by the Tamil community, particularly in the North and the East. The frequent issues that they face include the detention of certain individuals under the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act, the occupation of their lands by military forces, and the non-implementation of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution. The President also had several rounds of discussions with Tamil MPs regarding the resolution of such issues.
