PUCSL unhappy with CEB tariff revision

17 May 2023 | BY Buddhika Samaraweera

The electricity tariff revision submitted by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) is not of the kind expected by the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL), The Daily Morning learned.

The CEB proposal for the 1 July electricity tariff revision had been submitted to the PUCSL on Monday (15).

When contacted by The Daily Morning to inquire about the PUCSL's view on the proposed revision, PUCSL Chairman Janaka Ratnayake said: “This tariff revision is not in the way that we expected. We are currently evaluating it. After going through it in detail, we will make a statement within the next two to three days.”

Ratnayake recently said that electricity consumers should receive an immediate electricity tariff reduction by approximately 20%, given the recent reductions in the electricity demand, foreign exchange rates, and fuel prices. He also said that the electricity tariff revision that would be presented by the CEB should be in accordance with the data that he had presented about the reduction in electricity consumption and electricity generation costs.

Against this backdrop, Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera Tweeted on Monday that the CEB had submitted the relevant proposal and tariff filling-related requirements, in order to adjust the tariffs biannually on 1 January and 1 July, every year. According to him, the CEB had taken into consideration the actual generation data, the actual price of the inputs, the generation mix and the forecast for this year (2023) while giving the maximum benefit of the adjustments to low-consumption users.
