  • Dep. Nat’l Integration Min. opines that such an approach would make the affected communities be flexible to Govt. interventions

The National Integration Ministry stated that most of the land issues in the Northern and Eastern Provinces can be solved through an honest discussion.

Land issues in the Northern and Eastern Provinces have been caused by several factors such as the internal conflict, displacement, and administrative challenges.

When queried by The Daily Morning as to how the Government would solve such issues, National Integration Deputy Minister Muneer Mulaffer said that many land-related issues have been reported from areas such as Mannar and Mullaitivu, adding that there should be an honest discussion with the affected. "There are many issues that can be solved through an honest discussion. If the affected feel that our intervention is honest, they will be flexible."

Commenting on the issue of places of worship being built on land previously owned by individuals, he said: "Religion is one of the most sensitive aspects of society. We must handle such matters with great care and sensitivity. However, we are committed to working honestly to resolve these issues."

During the internal conflict, many people in the Northern and Eastern Provinces were forced to flee their residential areas, leaving their land abandoned or occupied by others, including the Government forces. After the war ended in 2009, displaced families returned, but are currently facing difficulties reclaiming their land due to unclear ownership records, land grabbing, or military control.
