Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasuriya revealed that 58 organised criminal gangs and approximately 1,400 individuals linked to them have been identified across Sri Lanka.
In a press conference held today (22), the Acting IGP disclosed that 17 shooting incidents and 5 hacking deaths have occurred this year, with investigations into all 17 shooting cases completed.
The Acting IGP also confirmed that members of both the police force and the Tri-Forces were found involved in some of these incidents, resulting in the arrest of 11 personnel.
He reported significant progress in the ongoing investigations, including the seizure of firearms such as T-56 assault rifles, pistols, and homemade gunpowder rifles.
To encourage public involvement, a Rs. 1 million reward will be given for information leading to the recovery of T-56 firearms.
