CEB acquires 163 MW Sojitz Kelanitissa

07 Apr 2023

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) acquired the 163 megawatts (MW) combined cycle power plant operated by Sojitz Kelanitissa (Private) Limited. The CEB has acquired the power plant on 28 March,2023.

The acquisition process initiated in the latter part of 2022, in accordance with the terms and conditions of the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).

Thus, the CEB owned 163 MW facility will be compatible with liquefied natural gas following some minor modifications which will thereby enable it to reduce the current cost of generation when the conversion takes place.

Under the Government’s policy framework, the CEB signed the PPA with Sojitz Kelanitissa (Pvt.) Ltd., in June, 2000 as an Independent Power Producer (IPP) on the build, own, operate and transfer (BOOT) basis.

The contract period was for 20 years and the power plant is located in Colombo’s Kelanitissa Power Plant complex.
