1988-89 justice for JVPers in the pipeline

The National People's Power (NPP) stated that while there has been no recent discussion on justice for Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) members killed during the 1988-1989 insurrections and their families, related efforts will be undertaken in the future.

A Marxist-Leninist political party in Sri Lanka, the JVP, is a founding member and key constituent party of the NPP coalition, which is now the ruling party.

When queried as to whether there had been any discussion on serving justice to JVPers killed during 1988-1989 and their families, NPP General Secretary and Government Parliamentarian, Dr. Nihal Abeysinghe said that the necessary actions would be taken in the future. "We have not had a special discussion on the matter recently. But, the necessary work will be done. The JVP is one of our key members. They will have the necessary discussions, and what is needed will happen."

Efforts to reach Dr. Abeysinghe and Deputy Minister of Public Security, attorney Sunil Watagala, for inquiries regarding justice for the killings attributed to the JVP during that period were unsuccessful.

Dr. Abeysinghe also said that while attention will be paid to such matters, they, as the ruling party, are also required to pay attention to other preliminary work such as the presentation of a Vote on Account for next year.

The 1988-1989 killings in Sri Lanka refer to a period of intense violence during the leftist insurrection led by the JVP against the then United National Party-led Government. In response, State security forces launched a crackdown to suppress the uprising, resulting in large-scale human rights abuses. Thousands of suspected JVP members, sympathisers, and civilians were killed or disappeared, with subsequent calls for justice for victims and their families.
