The National Democratic Voice (NDV) organisation urged the Government to reconsider any attempts to close or merge the Sri Lanka Thriposha Limited (SLTL) Company, warning that such a decision would jeopardise the nutritional support provided to vulnerable social groups.

NDV Spokesperson Ravi Kumudesh raised these concerns during a press conference held yesterday (7), emphasising the critical role that the SLTL plays in addressing malnutrition among low income communities. Kumudesh referred to a Gazette notification dated 27 September, which listed several government institutions slated for termination or consolidation. He claimed that the SLTL is included on this said list and criticised the potential move, stating that it would have severe consequences for those unable to meet their basic nutritional needs. “The termination of such a public entity is not reasonable,” he remarked. “Every country in the world maintains similar programmes to improve the nutrition of underprivileged groups, regardless of their economic strength.” According to Kumudesh, the SLTL’s role in addressing malnutrition is irreplaceable, and therefore, its closure would disproportionately affect vulnerable communities. He warned that the nutritional welfare of these groups could not be met through other means, as private sector alternatives may not prioritise accessibility or affordability.

He further alleged that certain private companies, which market products similar to those produced by the SLTL, have a vested interest in seeing the SLTL discontinued. “Many companies market products similar to the SLTL’s. They have lobbied for its termination to expand their businesses. In fact, several years ago, the SLTL introduced ‘Suwaposha’ to the general market, generating an income of approximately Rs. 500 million. This success clearly shows the SLTL’s potential to contribute to public health as well as the economy,“ he added.

In addition, he raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest, suggesting that some parties affiliated with the current Government may have ties to these private companies seeking to replace the SLTL.

Hence, he urged Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, who also serves as the Health Minister, to address these issues promptly. “We call on the Premier to take a closer look at this matter and to protect the SLTL from unwarranted interference. The nutritional needs of the vulnerable should not be compromised for corporate gain,” he concluded.

Health Ministry Secretary Dr. Palitha Mahipala was unavailable for comment.
