Admissions for NCOEs: No admissions called for NCOEs since ’19; MP Kavirathne

Member of the Parliament (MP) Rohini Kaviratne alleges that the Government has not taken steps to gazette admissions for the National Colleges of Education (NCOE) for the students who appeared for the General Certificate of Education Advanced Level (GCE A/L) examinations in the years 2019, 2020, 2021, or 2022.

MP Kaviratne also stressed that although there is a severe shortage of teachers in schools at present, the Ministry of Education has not taken any measures to overcome these issues. She further warned that against this backdrop, the country’s education system is in danger of collapse.

Speaking to The Daily Morning in this regard, General Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers' Union (CTU), Joseph Stalin, acknowledged that a relevant gazette has not been issued for this year. Noting that it is the NCOE that produces teachers for specific subjects, and in that context, this matter is of extreme importance, he expressed concerns about the fact that issuing the relevant gazettes has been delayed for a long time.

Multiple attempts by The Daily Morning to obtain the opinion of the Ministry Education in this regard proved futile.
