- The good, better, and best of Palitha Thewarapperuma
I am writing this as many mourn the demise of late politician Palitha Thewarapperuma who left us on Tuesday (16). While I try to be as apolitical as possible, I thought of writing this as a believer of humanity, which Thewarapperuma had in abundance.
In the grand tapestry of Sri Lanka's political narrative, there are certain figures who transcend the confines of time and space, leaving an enduring legacy that resonates through generations. Thewarapperuma, a name etched in the annals of the nation's history, stands tall as a symbol of unwavering dedication, profound empathy, and an unyielding commitment to the service of the people.
Born from humble beginnings, Thewarapperuma's journey was not one paved with silver spoons or inherited privileges. Instead, it was a path woven with the threads of hardship and struggle, a path that imbued him with a deep-rooted understanding of the plight of the common Sri Lankans. Growing up in modest circumstances, he experienced first-hand the challenges faced by many in his community. It was this empathy, this visceral connection to the struggles of his fellow citizens that would come to define his life's work.
As a beacon of hope for the marginalised and disadvantaged, Thewarapperuma's presence in the political arena was nothing short of transformative. His advocacy for social justice and equality was not just mere rhetoric; it was a resounding call to action that reverberated across the nation. With unwavering resolve, he stood as a staunch defender of the rights of children, the underprivileged, and the voiceless. In a landscape often marred by indifference, Thewarapperuma's unwavering commitment to these causes was a breath of fresh air, a beacon of hope for those who had long been ignored or marginalised. Whether it was a flood or the Covid-19 pandemic, whether you call it a media show, he did it best and better than most, and he is remembered not for the show but for what he did for the other without any discrimination or hesitation.
One of Thewarapperuma's most enduring legacies lies in his relentless pursuit to improve the education system, particularly in the rural heartlands of Sri Lanka. Recognising that education is the cornerstone of empowerment, he spearheaded bold initiatives that sought to uplift the youth from the shadows of ignorance and poverty. Schools became more than just buildings; they became beacons of hope, centres of learning where dreams were nurtured, and futures were shaped. Through his tireless efforts, countless children were given the opportunity to break free from the cycle of poverty and build brighter futures for themselves and their communities.
But, Thewarapperuma's impact transcended the realms of policy and legislation. It was in the quiet moments of compassion, the unassuming acts of kindness, that his true essence shone the brightest. Whether it was visiting schools in remote villages to personally interact with students and teachers, engaging with families struggling to make ends meet, or simply lending a listening ear to the voices of the marginalised, he embodied the true spirit of public service. His genuine care and concern for the well-being of others left an indelible mark on the hearts of those he touched.
His legacy, however, is not confined to the tangible outcomes of his endeavours. It lives on in the smiles of the children who now have access to quality education, in the hearts of the underprivileged who found a champion in him, and in the halls of power where his ideals continue to shape the course of Sri Lanka's future. Thewarapperuma's unwavering commitment to social justice and equality serves as a guiding light for a nation striving for a more inclusive and equitable society.
As we bid farewell to this remarkable soul, we do not mourn his passing; instead, we celebrate a life lived with purpose, passion, and profound impact. Let us carry forward his torch of compassion, justice, and service to others. In the quiet moments of reflection, let us remember his legacy and be inspired to stand up for what is right, to advocate for the voiceless, and to strive for a better, more equitable future for all.
Rest in peace, Thewarapperuma. Your legacy will forever be etched in the fabric of Sri Lanka's history, a testament to the power of empathy, dedication, and unwavering commitment to the service of humanity. Your life's work has left an indelible imprint on the hearts and minds of countless individuals, and your spirit will continue to inspire generations to come.
