The Government of Sri Lanka and Meta which owns Facebook and has made advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), specifically on open source technologies, have explored potential collaborations in the field of AI with a proposal for the development of a collaborative programme between Meta and Sri Lankan universities aimed at advancing AI technology.
This was when President Ranil Wickremesinghe met the former United Kingdom Deputy Prime Minister and current President for Global Affairs at Meta, Nick Clegg on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, United States.
President Wickremesinghe emphasised his two primary areas of focus: fostering the growth of the AI sector in the country, especially in the realm of education and utilising AI to support data driven initiatives aimed at addressing climate change.
