Jevahn Sathasivam and K. Danushan progressed towards the final stages of the Boys’ Gold Division at the Junior Match Play Championship 2023 which will take place at the Royal Colombo Golf Course today.
Jevahn Sathasivam the 15-year-old lad from Asian International School (AIS) secured a hard-fought win against the highly favoured Reshan Algama on the 19th hole in a sudden-death play-off. Jevahn overcame Reshan, who had an ordinary day to his usual high standards of golf, and Jevahn was able to topple the favoured Reshan out of the final competition. The AIS lad, playing some consistent golf in the recent past, is catching up with electrifying speed. K. Danushan displayed his prowess with an impressive victory, defeating Vinudha Weerasinghe 5/4.
The Girls' Gold Division also witnessed extraordinary performances. Kaya Daluwatte, drawing from her overseas experience and innate talent, secured her spot in the final by triumphing over Dinuumi Sanjana with a resounding 9/7 victory. Sherin Balasuriya exhibited her prowess by convincingly defeating Dhavinka Kanag-Isvaran with a score of 6/4. The final in this division is poised to be an electrifying contest between Kaya Daluwatte and Sherin Balasuriya, with Kaya holding the edge in the final.
In the Silver Division, Aditthya Weerasinghe faced a tough challenge against Keshav Algama, narrowly clinching victory with a 2-up win on the 18th hole. Kaiyan Johnpillai showcased his skills with a convincing 5/4 win against Shenal Nimsith. The Silver Division finals will be between Aditthya Weerasinghe and Kaiyan Johnpillai.
The Silver Division Girls’ segment saw Kaitlyn Norton and Keya Abhayaratne emerging victorious in their semifinal matches, setting the stage for an eagerly awaited final showdown between these talented individuals.
In the Bronze Division Boys’, Revaan Amarasinghe continued his winning streak by overcoming Lavidu Premarathna 3/2 while Yehansa Senanayake beat Anuja Methsara in the 19th hole playoff. The final in this division will witness a fierce competition between Revaan Amarasinghe and Yehansa Senanayake.
Genuli Abesundara secured her place in the Bronze Division Girls’ final with a 3/2 win in the semifinals, where she will face Nimasha Dhamli, who triumphed over Hesandi Gayasa Meepola with a score of 4/2.
In the Copper Division, Jaeden Sathasivam, one of the youngest in the tournament, is an 8-year-old from AIS. He, the younger brother of Jevahn, demonstrated his skills with a convincing 4/3 victory against Ananya Kishanthan. He will meet Yuvan Rathis Kanth in what promises to be an engaging final match.
The event’s final day today will see some top-class golf between the Juniors with the Prize giving taking place at the RCGC at 2.30 pm.
