Lalasha Rupasinghe is a 13-year-old currently in Grade 9 at Lyceum International School, Gampaha. Lalasha is not only an aspiring writer but also a talented pianist and singer, actively participating in her school’s senior choir and various clubs like debating and Model United Nations. Her passion for writing was sparked by her family’s influence and further encouraged by her friends and teachers. Recently, Lalasha achieved a significant milestone with the launch of her debut book, ‘Dorothy’s Journey,’ a testament to her creativity and determination.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I’m Lalasha Rupasinghe, 13 years old, studying at Lyceum International School, Gampaha in Grade 9. I’m from Gampaha, and I live with my mom, dad, and grandmother. My hobbies include playing the piano, singing, and dancing.
How did you discover your talent for writing?
I realised I could write when I started contributing articles to Lakehouse, where my mom works. People there gave me feedback, saying I was a good writer, and that’s how I came to know about my writing ability.
Do you only write stories, or do you explore other types of writing too?
I write a variety of things, not just stories. I enjoy crafting short stories, articles, and even poems.
Can you share a bit about your book?
My book is about five friends who embark on a journey to a forest for a school assignment. Along the way, they encounter various challenges that test their teamwork and individual capabilities. Each friend brings something unique to the table; for example, one is talented in writing while another excels at cooking. Through their adventures, they learn the importance of collaboration and utilising each other’s strengths to overcome obstacles.
How important do you think teamwork is?
Teamwork is really important because it brings people together. In the story and in real life, it helps me bond with others and gets work done smoothly. When we work as a team, facing challenges becomes easier, and progress happens faster. Teamwork allows us to accomplish many things, and it also makes the journey enjoyable and fun, which ultimately brings happiness.
Is this your first book?
Yes, it is. I’ve been writing short stories for newspapers for a while, and then I felt ready to tackle a longer story. This book is my debut into the world of longer narratives.
What is your dream?
My dream is to become the best children’s story writer. I come from a family background where writing runs in the blood, and that has inspired me a lot. I never imagined it would achieve this level of success, but with the support of my friends, family, and teachers, it became possible.
Do you have any career ambitions?
Yes, I have two main ambitions. First, I want to become a lecturer, sharing knowledge and inspiring students. Second, I aspire to continue my writing journey. Specifically, I aim to study economics, which aligns with my interests and career goals.
Do you have a favourite writer or a role model in writing?
Yes, my favourite writer and role model in writing is J.K. Rowling. I believe she is the best, and her work inspires me tremendously.
Are you referring to her work in the Harry Potter series?
Yes, exactly! I particularly enjoy Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. One of my favourite characters from that book is Buckbeak. What captivates me about the Harry Potter series is the abundance of mysteries and challenges the characters face. Rowling’s writing style is adventurous, incorporating elements of horror that add depth to the story.
What’s your experience with writing?
Writing makes me feel free. It’s a way for me to release stress and express myself. Sometimes, when I can’t share something with anyone else, I write it down. It’s a great way for me to release stress and find relief.
What about playing the piano?
Playing the piano is something I do for fun and enjoyment. I also take the ABRSM Royal School of Music exams, and I have lessons with Chamali Rajakaruna. I have a deep love for music, and I aspire to continue my studies in this field.
Do you also enjoy singing?
Yes. I’m a member of the senior choir at our school, and I’ve participated in numerous competitions. Singing is not only a part of my school activities but also something I do for fun, especially at family functions. It brings me joy and allows me to express myself creatively.
What activities are you involved in at school?
At school, I’m quite active in various clubs and sports. I’m a member of the debating club and the Model United Nations (MUN), where I engage in discussions and debates on important issues. I’m also part of the senior choir, where I get to showcase my singing talent. Besides that, I enjoy playing badminton, which keeps me active and fit.
If you had the opportunity to change the world, what would you change?
If given the chance, I would change the ability of other children to write. I would ensure that all children have the opportunity to learn and express themselves through writing stories. By empowering them with this skill, I believe I can make a significant impact on the world as they grow into capable and creative individuals.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank for your journey?
There are many people I’m grateful for. First and foremost, my family has been my biggest inspiration. I also want to thank my teacher Ramith Dheerasekara for reigniting my passion for writing. All my teachers at school have played a significant role in shaping my journey.
