  • Want Police to probe their complaints on politicos’ claims of post-poll violence

The Institute for Democratic Reforms and Electoral Studies (IRES) stated that election monitors have not received any verified information regarding a potential ban on social media platforms, particularly Facebook, ahead of the upcoming Presidential Election.

Speaking to the media yesterday (19), IRES Executive Director Manjula Gajanayake addressed concerns over the spread of unverified claims and misinformation from various parties. Gajanayake said: “We have not received any verified information indicating a necessity to ban social media on or before the Presidential Election date.” He pointed out that representatives from social media companies, including Meta, have confirmed to election-monitoring bodies that there are no plans for such a ban. Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of responsible behaviour among the public, stressing that individuals must act prudently to avoid creating any grounds for potential restrictions. He stated: “It is essential for the public to behave responsibly to prevent any situation that might warrant a ban.”

He also called for swift action against public servants who violate election laws, underscoring the significance of upholding electoral integrity. He remarked that immediate measures are necessary to ensure the credibility of the upcoming Elections, which are scheduled to follow the Presidential Election.

In addition, Gajanayake noted that the IRES has filed complaints with the Police Department regarding statements made by certain politicians about possible post-electoral violence. He urged the authorities to investigate the basis of these statements, stressing that such comments could exacerbate tensions during this critical electoral period.
