Sri Lanka won the silver medal in the qualifying round of the “E-Sports” category of the Asian Games to be held in Hangzhou, China.
Five countries including Sri Lanka were included in the qualifying round of the Central and South Asian region. Sri Lanka competed in its mobile phone “Sports” category where Sri Lanka was able to remain at the top after the first round.
The remaining four teams had to face off again for a qualifying round. Out of which Nepal won the first place, while Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan won the second and third places. Uzbekistan finished 5th and had to withdraw from the tournament. Accordingly, Sri Lanka along with the first Three teams competed in the final round.
Two matches were held in the final round. Kazakhstan won the gold medal in that competition. Sri Lanka finished second and Nepal had to settle for the bronze medal. Kyrgyzstan took fourth place. The Sri Lankan team included players nicknamed Mamta, Jimmy, Toter, Lucifer, and Laser.
In the last Asian Games in Jakarta, China managed to take the lead in the medal list among the “E-Sports” events. They won two gold medals and one silver medal. Hosts Indonesia and South Korea finished in second place on the list with one gold and one silver. Hong Kong and Japan were placed 3rd in the table.
