- EC defends organisation, dignity, & impartiality of event
The Presidential candidate for the National Democratic Front and Government Parliamentarian Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe expressed his discontent regarding the recent conduct of the Election Commission (EC) during the nomination acceptance event for the upcoming Presidential Election.
Speaking to the media after submitting his nomination yesterday (15), Dr. Rajapakshe urged the EC to uphold discipline and dignity throughout the electoral process. He highlighted that this year’s nomination event was markedly different from previous years in terms of decorum and organisation.
“The event held today (15) to accept the nominations was not respectful as in previous years, and a lack of discipline was evident from certain parties,” he remarked.
He emphasised that traditionally, the nomination process had always been conducted with a high level of discipline, a standard that he feels was not maintained this year. He stressed the importance of those aspiring to lead the nation setting a positive example for the public.
“The people who are going to take over the responsibility of ruling the country must provide an example of good conduct,” he stated.
He warned that the lack of discipline observed during the nomination process could damage the country’s reputation on the international stage. Furthermore, Dr. Rajapakshe accused certain groups of fielding ‘dummy candidates’ to promote a particular Presidential candidate, describing their behaviour as akin to that of a ‘gang’ during the nomination event.
Hence, he urged the EC to take its role seriously and to ensure that discipline is maintained throughout the electoral process. According to him, this is crucial not only for the integrity of the election but also for setting a positive example to the public.
“Sometimes, this is because of the lack of experience of the incumbent EC. Yet, we urge them to maintain discipline throughout the electoral process,” he added.
However, when contacted by The Daily Morning yesterday, EC Chairperson R.M.A.L. Rathnayake stated that the event was held without any issue and that everyone who was present at the event praised its organisation. He also noted that the EC has been able to maintain dignity and impartiality throughout the electoral process thus far.
“Sometimes, this could be his personal view. Yet, the EC is committed to fulfilling each and every responsibility with high standards,” he added.
