- CJ tells AG to forward same to all universities
The Attorney General (AG) has informed the Supreme Court (SC) that a series of guidelines have been prepared to eliminate incidents of ragging in State universities.
A fundamental rights petition filed by a student affected by a ragging incident at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura in 2020 was taken up before a three-judge SC bench consisting of President’s Counsel (PC) and Chief Justice (CJ) Jayantha Jayasuriya, and Justices Shiran Gooneratne and Priyantha Fernando. The petitioner stated that he sustained severe physical injuries and brain trauma after a large backhoe tire was rolled down. As a result, he was hospitalised for nearly three months. However, the petitioner indicated that he has not fully recovered. The petitioner further requested that the SC issue a ruling declaring that his basic human rights were violated through this act and that an order be issued to prepare guidelines to eradicate ragging in universities.
Appearing on behalf of the AG, Deputy Solicitor General Dr. Avanti Perera stated before the Court that a series of guidelines has been prepared to prevent ragging in State universities.
CJ Jayasuriya PC mentioned that the guidelines should be forwarded to all universities and that any proposed amendments should be incorporated into the final draft. The CJ also ordered that steps be taken to prepare and file the final draft before the Court.
