Sri Lanka took a major step toward digital transformation with the launch of three key initiatives under President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s leadership.
The projects include GovPay, a digital Government payment platform, the decentralization of the President’s Fund to Divisional Secretariats, and the eBMD system for Sri Lankans abroad to obtain birth, marriage, and death certificates via embassies.
Implemented by the Ministry of Digital Economy, ICTA, and LankaPay, the initiatives aim to streamline services, enhance accessibility, and bridge the urban-rural divide.
GovPay will initially support transactions for 16 government institutions, expanding to 30 more by April.
President Dissanayake emphasised the urgent need for digitalization to improve efficiency, transparency, and citizen convenience.
Officials highlighted that Sri Lanka has 75% of the skills needed for a strong digital economy and aims to bridge the remaining gaps within three years.
A Sri Lankan resident in South Korea successfully obtained a birth certificate online, marking a milestone in global accessibility for Sri Lankans.
