First session of the 10th parliament commences

21 Nov 2024

The first parliamentary session of the 10th Parliament began today (21) at 10:00 a.m., with Members of Parliament arriving for the proceedings.

The inaugural session is being held in a simple manner, as announced by the Office of the Secretary General of Parliament, without traditional ceremonies such as military salutes, gun salutes, or processions.

The agenda includes electing the Speaker, administering the Speaker’s oath, swearing in MPs, and selecting the Deputy Speaker and Deputy Chairperson of Committees.

MPs can choose their seats freely on the first day, as no fixed seating arrangements are in place.

After these initial activities, the session will adjourn temporarily before President Anura Kumara Dissanayake delivers the government’s policy statement from the Speaker’s chair at 11:30 a.m.
