The controlling authority of the Kalubowila Teaching Hospital has temporarily refused to accept dead bodies that are unidentified or guardianless.
The mortuary of the hospital currently possesses 28 so called corpses.
The Kalubowila Teaching Hospital has mortuary refrigerator facilities to deposit 36 bodies, however, 2 refrigerators have been seperated for body parts and other essential services.
Meanwhile. for the past 14 months, the control authority of the hospital had to use 28 refrigerators out of 34 to keep unidentified and guardianless dead bodies.
These include bodies handed over by police stations and bodies of people who were hospitalized without guardians.
It was made known that 8-10 bodies per day were accepted by the hospital due to court orders and other reasons.
And therefore, the bodies had to be kept on trolleys.
The reason for the stacking up of bodies has been due to the refusal of the police to conduct postmortems.
On that reason, the Kalubowila Teaching Hospital's control authority has decided to temporarily stop accepting unidentified and guardianless dead bodies.
This has been informed to the police by the forensic doctors via the hospital director.
Sources reveal that the Colombo National Hospital also hold bodies that are 2 years or older, including 60 unidentified and guardianless ones.
