The Lawyers Collective, a group of concerned citizens and notable legal professionals, has sent an urgent letter to President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The letter, dated 21.12.2023, highlights the recent unanimous Supreme Court decision in the case of Sumangala v Bandara and Others. The SC found that individuals, including Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon, violated fundamental rights such as freedom from torture, unlawful arrest, and arbitrary administrative actions.
The letter calls for decisive action, including the termination of Tennakoon's appointment, criminal charges, and disciplinary measures.
It also expresses concern about the lack of immediate action against Tennakoon and calls for upholding democratic principles and the rule of law. The Lawyers Collective emphasises the gravity of the situation and urges President Wickremesinghe to act promptly.
