Appeal Court upholds death sentence for ‘Julampitiye Amare’

20 Nov 2024

The Court of Appeal upheld the death sentence for Geeganagamage Amarasiri, alias ‘Julampitiye Amare,’ who was convicted for killing two individuals at a JVP rally in June 2012.

The verdict was delivered after Amarasiri appealed his sentence by claiming that the Tangalle High Court (HC) did not consider his defence evidence.

Accordingly, the Appeals Court, led by a two-member judge bench, dismissed the appeal and upheld the death sentence originally imposed on 7 November 2019.
