The National Consumer Front (NCF) urged the new administration led by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP)-led National People's Power (NPP) to enhance the consumer care system by strengthening the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA).
Speaking to The Daily Morning yesterday (25), NCF Leader Asela Sampath highlighted the urgent need for the effective regulation of market irregularities. “It is the responsibility of the new administration to ensure that consumers are protected and that the CAA is equipped to address their concerns effectively”. he stated,He specifically called on the new Minister of Trade, Commerce and Food Security, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya to take decisive action in tackling sectoral issues that affect consumers. He emphasised that an efficient CAA is crucial for safeguarding consumer rights and maintaining fair market practices.
Regarding recent developments in the egg market, Sampath noted the NCF’s plans to lodge a complaint with the CAA against shopkeepers who have failed to pass on price reductions to customers. “We are meeting with the CAA today (26) to address these violations. It is unacceptable for consumers not to benefit from the price reductions”he remarked. He, expressing frustration with the CAA's perceived inaction, stated: “The CAA has hesitated in responding to issues related to market behaviour, which undermines consumer trust and protection.”
He reiterated that a proactive approach from the new Government is essential to restore confidence among consumers and ensure that their rights are upheld.
