- Fmr. SLFP Exec. Member queries source of funding of Sirisena’s Easter compensation payments, alleges sale of Party
A former Executive Committee member of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), Montague Sarathchandra has filed a complaint with the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) against former President and incumbent Opposition Parliamentarian and former SLFP Chairperson Maithripala Sirisena.
In a letter to the Chairperson of the CIABOC, Sarathchandra claims that Party supporters are speculating that Sirisena has paid compensation to the victims of the Easter Sunday terror attacks, with an “advance obtained from selling the SLFP”. The said complaint has been filed seeking an investigation in relation to how he had obtained the relevant funds.
Speaking to The Daily Morning yesterday (16), Sarathchandra alleged that there is suspicion that Sirisena has been bribed by some party amidst the entire SLFP being in chaos. He also noted that the CIABOC should investigate the matter immediately since there are many court cases being heard at this moment. He further claimed that they had noticed an alleged link between Sirisena getting such a huge amount of money and his resignation as the SLFP Chairperson. Stating that it is somewhat difficult to figure out the reasons behind Sirisena’s sudden resignation, Sarathchandra noted that the chronological order of the incidents provides some hint about the matter, and therefore urged the CIABOC to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
