01 Dec 2024 | BY Lahiru Doloswala

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) of the Sri Lanka police have arrested three individuals for allegedly sharing videos related to Maaveerar Naal, the remembrance day observed by Sri Lankan Tamils to remember the deaths of militants who fought with the separatist organization Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

The police allege that the trio have circulated old videos Maaveerar Naal on social media, falsely presenting them as being from this year (2024).

The suspects, aged 28, 35, and 45, have been identified as residents of Maradana, Vunnakam, and Baddegama, respectively.

They have been charged under Section 120 of the Penal Code and Section 27 of the Provisional Measures for the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) No. 48 of 1979.

The charges include inciting public unrest, promoting the activities of a banned organization, and spreading false propaganda.

The CID and TID are continuing investigations into the case.
