Sri Lankan marathon champion Hiruni Wijayaratne won the silver medal in the women's 10-mile marathon event at the Credit Union Sacktown Marathon held in the US.
After recording a time of 56.45 minutes. This made history as the best time recorded by a Sri Lankan athlete in the 10 mile marathon. Previously, in 2016, Hiruni recorded a time of 1:01:16 for the 10-mile marathon as her best performance.
Hiruni, who is training in the US, told The Daily Morning Sports after her event: “I am proud of this race for many reasons as I have had a difficult past few weeks due to the sudden and unexpected passing of my father. Today and every race in the future, I will run in honor of him. He was an avid runner and national athlete for Sri Lanka. I know he will be proud of me for continuing to try my best.”
Hiruni, who has represented Sri Lanka in the Asian Championship, was also the champion of the women's marathon event at the South Asian Games held in Nepal in 2019.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka's sprinter Amasha de Silva won a silver medal in the 100 m event while participating in an athletics championship in Trinidad yesterday (3).
Amasha participated in the 100 m event in the 20th Annual Falcon Athletics Championship, where Amasha managed to finish the event in 10.84 seconds.
Speaking after the win, she said: “I am happy that I was able to run a good race at the start of the season. Also, I think my start has improved a lot. And my coach here, Ian Carter, analyzed the event after the match. Training is being continued on the areas that need to be improved.”
Amasha trained under Sanjeewa Weerakkody in Sri Lanka.
The Indian volleyball team wins at Horana
Adding a new page to the history of Sri Lankan volleyball, the Indian junior volleyball team managed to record a 3-0 victory in the match held in Horana the day before yesterday (2).
The Indian junior volleyball champion team came for a invitational volleyball tournament last week. In the first match held at the Radawana Golden Birds Stadium, the Indian team won 3-0 in the first round and in the second game they defeated the Sri Lanka Power Board team with the score of 26-24, 25-19 and 25-20 in the three rounds.
