The Cabinet decided on 25th March 2024 to maintain the Special Commodity Levy Act No. 48 of 2007, which regulates the importation of 63 items, including essential food products.
Accordingly, the decision follows concerns that repealing the law could lead to higher market prices and harm domestic farmers.
The special trade levy will remain in effect, with an updated application set for 1 January 2025.
