Following an order issued by the Colombo Magistrate's Court (MC), the Borella Police is currently examining the mobile phone data of Janashakthi PLC Director Dinesh Schaffter – who was murdered on 15 December – as well as his wife Tani Schaffter, his secretary Chris Perera, and former cricket commentator Brian Thomas.
The Colombo Magistrate's Court granted permission to the Borella Police to examine the data of the mobile phones used by Schaffter, Tani Schaffter, Perera, and Thomas. Permission was granted after taking into account a request made by the Borella Police.
When contacted by The Morning, the Police Media Division stated that there are no significant updates regarding the ongoing investigations as of yesterday (22) evening.
Schaffter died at the National Hospital in Colombo on 15 December after being found tied to the driver’s seat of his vehicle with a wire around his neck. He had left home that afternoon, according to a statement made by his wife, to attend a meeting, and had not returned home. His wife had located him near the Borella Cemetery by GPS-tracking his mobile phone. Perera had then immediately arrived at the scene, following which, he had taken Schaffter to the hospital. The hospital confirmed that same night that Schaffter had passed away upon admission.
Meanwhile, commenting to the media on the progress of the relevant investigations on Wednesday (21), Police Media Spokesman, Senior Superintendent of Police and Attorney-at-Law Nihal Thalduwa said that although no arrest had been made, or suspect had been identified in relation to the incident, there is clear progress in the ongoing investigations conducted by the Homicide and Organised Crime Investigation Division of the Criminal Investigations Department, and the Borella Police.
