A special investigation has been commenced into the death of a burn injury patient being treated at the National Hospital in Colombo following the administration of an antibiotic injection.
The 31-year-old male in question had been receiving treatment in ward 17 where he had been given the antibiotic drug Cefuroxime. He had died afterwards.
Senior Hospital administrator Dr. Kumara Wickramasinghe had told Ada Derana upon inquiry that a special probe has been commenced into the said death in order to ascertain whether it was due to the intravenously administered antibiotic or due to another reason. He added that the batch from which the particular antibiotic injection came from has however since been removed from use.
Attempts to contact Wickramasinghe and the Hospital’s Deputy Director Dr. Rukshan Bellana proved futile.
