Netball, automobile, cycling still in limbo

02 Feb 2025

There is currently no immediate end in sight to the legal cases pending linked to the netball, automobile, and cycling federations, according to Director General of Sports Shemal Fernando.

Speaking to The Sunday Morning Sports, Fernando said that Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage had already held talks with officials of the three federations and had advised them to expedite the legal proceedings, but noted that no positive response had been forthcoming thus far.

He added that this had invariably hindered the smooth running of the three sports, noting that it was the players who had been affected by the consequences.

Fernando was appointed as the Competent Authority for the netball, automobile, rugby, and cycling bodies after former Sports Minister Harin Fernando suspended the federations on 29 May 2024 over their collective failure to hold their Annual General Meetings (AGMs) before the annual cutoff date of 31 May 2024.
