The Colombo Fort Magistrate's Court yesterday (27) issued an arrest warrant on Dan Priyasad and Mahinda Kahandagama in relation to a case filed against the attack carried out by Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) supporters on the ‘GotaGoGama’ protest site in Galle Face which demanded the resignation of then-President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in Colombo in 2022.
When the relevant case was taken up before Colombo Fort Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali yesterday, all suspects who have been released on bail including former Parliamentarians Johnston Fernando and Milan Jayathilake appeared before the Court.
However, Priyasad and Kahandagama, who have also been named as suspects in relation to the incident, did not appear before the Court, and attorneys representing them informed the Court that they (suspects) were out of the country. The Magistrate then ordered that arrest warrants be issued on them. She also ordered that the suspects be produced before Court upon their arrest.
The Criminal Investigations Department which made submissions to the Court in relation to the case, informed that the relevant investigations had been concluded, and that the necessary reports had been referred to the Attorney General's (AG) Department for further action. The Magistrate accordingly ordered that the case be taken up again on 26 March of next year (2025) for AG's instructions.
