AAIB inspects flood damaged crops

  • Floods that began in P’naruwa, Vavuniya, Mullaitivu, Trinco and Ampara in Nov. 2024 considered; Rs. 306 m compensation being paid out to 18,200-plus farmers 
  • Assessing begun on N’Eliya crop damages due to heavy rains




The Agricultural and Agrarian Insurance Board (AAIB) has completed the inspection of crops damaged by the floods that began on 26 November of last year (2024) during the Maha season, informed the AAIB Chairperson Pemasiri Jansingarachchi.

Speaking to the media on Monday (10), he stated that compensation payments have already commenced for the damaged crops, with Rs. 114 million allocated for 9,067.40 acres covering 6,239 farmers affected in the Polonnaruwa District. Additionally, the Board has begun the process of crediting compensation money to the accounts of farmers in Vavuniya, Mullaitivu, and Trincomalee, following recommendations received from these districts. In this regard, Rs. 70 million is set to be credited to the accounts of 3,272 farmers for 4,324 acres of damaged crops. Moreover, the Board is assisting 8,705 farmers covering 7,657 acres in the Ampara District, with compensation amounting to Rs. 122 million. 

Furthermore, the heavy rains that fell in the Nuwara Eliya District on 9 February have caused damage to paddy, green chillie, and potato crops. The process of assessing the extent of the damage to these crops has also begun.
