The All Ceylon Bakery Owners’ Association (ACBOA) claimed that inferior-quality bread is being produced due to the fault of bakers or oven-related issues.
Moreover, the association noted that reductions in the price of flour in comparison to the appreciation of the Sri Lankan rupee will contribute to the reduction of prices of bakery items.
Consumers purchasing bread in the City of Colombo have allegedly complained that bakers produce poor quality bread, which, they claim, is not properly baked and becomes stale quickly.
However, ACBOA President N.K. Jayawardena told The Daily Morning yesterday (5) that they had not received any complaints from consumers in this regard.
Accordingly, he claimed: “There shouldn’t be any inferior quality in the flour or in any of the baking ingredients. The reason for the bread that is not baked properly may be due to the bakers’ mistakes or oven-related issues. Even if the flour is of low quality, the bread dough must be baked sufficiently. Accordingly, if the producers and sellers know that the bread is of poor quality, it is illegal to sell such bread or any items, including bakery products. ”
He further stressed that the increased prices of poultry meat have made it difficult for the association to consider reducing the prices of bakery items.
