The Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) has planned to present a series of proposals concerning the health and health-related education sectors to the Presidential candidates after nominations for the forthcoming Presidential Election have been granted.
Nominations for the Presidential Election to be held on 21 September are to be granted today (15).
Speaking to The Daily Morning yesterday (14), GMOA Spokesperson Dr. Chamil Wijesinghe said that while they have already met with several Presidential candidates to discuss matters pertaining to the health sector and health-related education, they have also prepared a series of proposals concerning the same.
“In general, we have our suggestions with regard to the reforms that are needed to be made in the health sector and for health related education. We have planned to hand them over to the Presidential candidates after they are granted nominations.”
Health and education are two key sectors where decisive election promises are typically made, and the public is closely watching the candidates' plans for their development.
The country’s health sector faced numerous challenges in recent years, particularly during the economic crisis under former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s Government. The crisis began with severe shortages of various pharmaceutical drugs and medical supplies, which were partially alleviated through support from international organisations. However, the situation was further complicated by the importation of substandard drugs, with the relevant authorities criticised for failing to prevent such. Additionally, the exodus of medical professionals led to significant staffing shortages in Government hospitals.
