Matale, Kandy, and Ampara districts hit hard
A total of 1,511 individuals from 346 families in the Matale, Kandy, and Ampara districts have been affected by the current inclement weather conditions around the island, the Disaster
Management Centre (DMC) reported yesterday (26).
Over 66 houses have been partially damaged owing to the situation, the DMC added.
Meanwhile, two youths including a female were reported dead on Sunday (25)
and another injured after an earth slip buried their house in Dunuwila,
Akurana. The DMC stated that there had been five individuals inside the
house at the time of the incident. The two youths who had died from the
incident were identified to be aged 16 and 18 years, and are siblings from the
same family.
The heavy rainfall brought about by the atmospheric depression wreaked
havoc in the Central Province on Sunday, with vehicles seen floating in
intensely flooded areas.
As a result of the flooding, the train services from Kandy were suspended, as
the Kandy Railway Station was flooded, with the rail tracks completely
submerged. The night mail trains from Colombo Fort to Badulla and from
Badulla to Colombo Fort were also cancelled on Sunday.
