Ranasinghe appointed Acting AG

30 Jun 2024

President Ranil Wickremesinghe has appointed President’s Counsel K.A.P. Ranasinghe, the Senior Additional Solicitor General, as the Acting Attorney General.

This temporary appointment will be in effect from 28 June to 11 July, as per Article 61E(b) of the Constitution, read with Article 41C, according to high-level sources.

Sources confirmed that Ranasinghe’s appointment as Acting Attorney General was in addition to his current responsibilities.

On two occasions, the Constitutional Council (CC) rejected President Wickremesinghe’s proposal to extend the term of office of former Attorney General Sanjay Rajaratnam, PC, for an additional six months.

Rajaratnam retired on Wednesday (26).

The first proposal for extension was defeated with five votes against it while three members voted in favour.

The CC rejected the proposal for the second time amid criticism against the proposal from the political sphere, the legal sector, and civil society.
