Seven staff members of a leading supermarket in Borella, were remanded in connection with the incident of brutally assaulting a female customer are to be produced for an identification parade today.
Following the circulation of CCTV video footage of a woman being brutally attacked at a leading supermarket on social media platforms, the Police had arrested seven suspects including three men and four women.
Speaking to The Daily Morning yesterday (24), the Police Media Division said that the suspects had been produced before the Colombo Magistrate's Court, after which they had been remanded until today (25). The Police further said that the suspects would be produced for an identification parade today.
Police had launched an investigation into the incident after a closed circuit television (CCTV) footage showing a group of staff members of the supermarket assaulting a female customer went viral on social media platforms. It was initially reported that the incident had taken place in Hanwella, but it was later reported that it was in Borella that the incident had occurred. It is said that the staff members had assaulted the victim for alleged shoplifting on 18 September.
The management of the supermarket had also issued a media statement stating that they would take stern action against those responsible for the incident, but the supermarket chain in question has attracted much criticism on social media platforms, even to the extent of many people having said that they would boycott it.
