The Police stated that no suspects have been arrested yet in connection with the recent attack on the United National Party (UNP) operational office in Dambulla.

Speaking to The Daily Morning yesterday (11), the Officer in Charge of the Dambulla Police Station, Chief Inspector R.R.M. Wasantha stated: “The investigation is being carried out further, and a special Police team has been deployed with regards to the matter. No suspect has been arrested thus far.” He further emphasised that the Police is diligently working to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack under the supervision of senior Police officers.

While the attack has raised concerns among political parties and election monitoring bodies, highlighting the potential for election-related violence as the country gears up for upcoming elections, UNP General Secretary Palitha Range Bandara, speaking to The Daily Morning, called on the Police to take the matter seriously. “Any kind of election violence should not be tolerated,” Range Bandara asserted, urging the authorities to ensure a peaceful and fair election process.

In addition, the People's Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) has expressed its condemnation of the attack and called for immediate action to prevent further incidents. In a letter addressed to the Inspector General of Police, PAFFREL stressed the importance of curbing election violence at its initial stages. The organisation stated that the Police Department holds the responsibility to prevent such violence and ensure a safe environment for all political activities.

Attempts made to contact the Election Commission Chairperson R.M.A.L. Rathnayake and its Commissioner General Saman Sri Ratnayake proved futile.
