Legal expert Prathibha Mahanamahewa believes the US withdrawal from the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) offers Sri Lanka a chance to challenge the previous resolution at the 58th session on 24 February.

He noted that the US has led accusations against Sri Lanka, but its exit could shift the geopolitical balance. 

Sri Lanka now has an opportunity to present a local human rights framework and gain support from India, South Africa, and Japan.
