Sri Lanka to develop Victoria dam as major tourist attraction

05 Jan 2024

The Victoria Dam in Kandy and the surrounding area is to be developed as a major tourist attraction according to a proposal by President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Victoria Dam, which is considered to be the largest in the country was built under the accelerated Mahaweli development project.

The dam is named after Queen Victoria and was opened in 1985 by President J.R. Jayewardene and Former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Margaret Thatcher.

Accordingly, a statue of Queen Victoria will also be installed near the dam.

The development project is underway and Central Province Governor Lalith Gamage visited the area to inspect its progress yesterday (4).

The Governor stated that the further development of this place as a place of attraction for local and foreign tourists will open new income avenues for locals.
