JVP-NPP to go solo

  • Says no alliances with other parties/groups, but would welcome ‘clean’ politicos regardless of affiliations

Claiming that they would welcome any individual with an unblemished political practice, irrespective of their current political affiliations, to their Party, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) led National People's Power (NPP) stated however that there is no preparation to form alliances with other political groups or parties.

With the Presidential Election scheduled to be held this year (2024), the possible crossovers of politicians and formations of political alliances are currently being talked about.

Speaking to The Daily Morning yesterday (4), the NPP Parliamentarian Vijitha Herath said that the NPP would also welcome any individual with an unblemished history of politics. "If there is anyone progressive who has not been accused of fraud and corruption and the misuse of power, they can join us (NPP). Be they from the United National Party, the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, the Tamil National Alliance or the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, we will welcome them. It is such people who have joined us as of now." He also said that any politician who is willing to join the NPP should also welcome their (NPP) policies and programme.

When queried as to whether they would consider forming any political alliance aimed at future elections, he said that there were no such preparations. "We will not join another political group or alliance, nor will we welcome any to the NPP, but, if there is anyone with the said qualities, they can leave their parties and join us."

Against the backdrop of President Ranil Wickremesinghe having stated that both the Presidential and Parliamentary Elections will be held this year, several new political parties, movements and alliances, and election candidates are currently being talked about. The Government Parliamentarians who recently became Opposition MPs have formed a few such political movements, and some of them have hinted at an alliance with the main Parliamentary Opposition Party, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya.
