The Sivagangai ferry service resumed operations yesterday (22) after a three-month suspension due to bad weather and technical issues, according to Subham Freight Carriers India Ltd. Chief Operating Officer (COO) K.M. Jeiyaseelan.
The service, which initially halted on 5 November 2024, restarted with 83 passengers travelling from India to Sri Lanka and 89 departing from Sri Lanka.
Originally launched in August last year, the ferry service has been operating under the protection of the Navy and with the approval of the Government.
It runs six days a week, excluding Tuesdays, and is expected to continue until the latter part of next year.
The ferry service had been relaunched for the first time in August 2024 after a 41-year hiatus owing to Sri Lanka’s ethnic conflict.
The journey covers a distance of 110 km between Nagapattinam in India and Kankesanthurai in Sri Lanka.
The resumption of ferry operations marks a significant step in restoring passenger movement between the two countries, providing a reliable and affordable transportation option.
The authorities have assured that all necessary measures are in place to ensure smooth and safe operations going forward.
