- Says, Govt. well aware of the hardships faced by people
The Senior Consultant to the President on Economic Affairs and Finance, Prof. Anil Jayantha Fernando, yesterday emphasised that the Government’s relief and subsidy programmes are designed to improve the livelihoods of the people, rather than to secure political gains.
Speaking to the media yesterday (13), Prof. Fernando stated that the Government is fully aware of the financial difficulties faced by the public.
He highlighted the significance of these relief efforts, explaining that they are a vital component in boosting the national economy. "This relief programme is crucial in strengthening the country's economy because the people must be empowered in order to contribute to economic development," he said. Prof. Fernando noted that one such initiative, the fertiliser subsidy, was introduced to help farmers and ultimately support the agricultural sector, which is a key part of the economy.
Responding to criticism about the relief and it being provided before the General Election, Fernando argued that these efforts are not politically motivated, stating that the current Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP)-led National People’s Power Government is focused on improving people’s lives. "We aim to uplift the lives of the people through these relief measures, not for any political benefit," Prof. Fernando asserted.
Additionally, he pointed out that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has recognised the importance of such programmes. "This rationale was understood by the IMF as well. They also approve of these kinds of relief initiatives," he added, stating the Government’s commitment to economic recovery through practical and necessary support for the people.
