Intelligence reports have revealed that certain groups are attempting to disrupt the ongoing investigations into the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks, according to Public Security Ministry Secretary Ravi Seneviratne.

Speaking at a press conference on the progress of the investigations, Seneviratne stressed the Government’s commitment to securing justice and stated that strong legal action would be taken against those obstructing the process.

He also expressed gratitude to the Intelligence Division and the tri-forces for their unwavering support in the investigation.

“We have to thank the Intelligence Division and the tri-forces for their support. With their support, we believe we can resolve this investigation,” Seneviratne said.

“There were many incidents in the past where national security was compromised. These investigations have been relaunched following the election of the new Government,” he stated.

He added that significant progress had been made in the investigations, with several individuals already arrested, produced before courts, and indicted. “Some have been arrested, their investigations have been completed, and they have been indicted before courts. Others are pending court inquiries,” he explained.

The Secretary highlighted that the ministry was revisiting aspects of the investigation that had been previously overlooked.

“We are trying to identify the things not previously investigated and relaunch how this investigation was conducted,” he said.

The Easter Sunday attacks, which took place on 21 April 2019, claimed the lives of 271 people and left hundreds injured. The Government has faced criticism over delays in bringing those responsible to justice.
