The Elections Commission (EC) stated that there is no legal impediment for holding other elections including the Presidential and Parliamentary elections without holding the Local Government (LG) elections which has been postponed indefinitely.

The LG elections have been postponed indefinitely due to the Ministry of Finance, Economic Stabilisation and National Policies and the general Treasury not releasing the required funds. However, there is an ongoing discussion in political circles and in society about the possibility of holding a Presidential election or a Parliamentary election near term or before the LG elections are held.

The Daily Morning asked the Chairman of the EC, attorney Nimal G. Punchihewa, about the possibility of holding another election without holding the LG elections.

In response, he said that there is no legal obstacle to holding another election in that way. "Even in the current situation regarding the LG elections, there is no legal obstacle to hold another election including Presidential and Parliamentary elections."

The General Secretary of the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), MP, attorney Sagara Kariyawasam recently said that President and Finance Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had hinted that an election would be held soon. "Wickremesinghe did not say anything about a specific election, but an idea that an election would be held soon came from him. There is no clarity about whether it will be the LG elections, the Presidential election, or the Parliamentary election."

An election in the near future has been discussed in the background that the 2023 LG election is continuously being postponed due to the EC not receiving the necessary financial allocations. Wickremesinghe and several other Government representatives said in the recent past that it was difficult for the general Treasury to allocate the necessary money for holding the LG elections in the current economic situation of the country.
