The Supreme Court (SC) has ordered the National Police Commission (NPC) to conclude the investigations into the former Director of the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) and current Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Nalaka de Silva pertaining to an alleged plot to assassinate former President Maithripala Sirisena, during the tenure of the United National Front for Good Governance Government.
This order was issued by a two-Judge bench consisting of Justices, President’s Counsel (PC) S. Thurairaja and A.H.M.D. Nawaz when a Fundamental Rights petition filed by de Silva was taken up for consideration yesterday (19).
The PC who appeared for the petitioner, pointed out that following the arrest of his client, he was suspended from duties and that after that, he was sent on compulsory leave. Furthermore, he stated that several investigations are ongoing against his client, thus hindering his ability to secure promotions.
The bench which considered all the facts presented, ordered that all investigations into de Silva be concluded as soon as possible. Thus, the NPC was ordered to conclude the relevant investigations against the petitioner within a period of three months.
Later, the petition was ordered to be recalled on 28 February 2025.
