- Urge Prez to reconstitute PUCSL & for CEB to submit tariff revision proposal
The Electricity Consumers Association (ECA) urged the Government to implement the electricity tariff revision that should have taken place last month (September), as soon as possible.
Under the relevant provisions, electricity tariffs are supposed to be revised on a quarterly basis.
Speaking to The Daily Morning yesterday (2), ECA General Secretary Sanjeewa Dhammika said that the National People's Power, during their Presidential Election campaign, promised that significant electricity tariff relief would be provided to the public.
“That was their promise to the people. Let alone that, why doesn't the Government take steps to implement the tariff revision which was supposed to take place last month? It is true that they came to power very recently, but they should direct the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) to do it as much as possible,” he said.
He also said that although President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has made various appointments to Government institutions, the Members/Commissioners for the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) are yet to be appointed. “It isn't possible to do anything without appointing Members for the PUCSL. They only go through the tariff revision proposal and approve it.” He further said that the CEB has not submitted a proposal to the PUCSL yet to revise electricity tariffs, and hence urged the President and the CEB to appoint PUCSL Members and submit a tariff revision proposal, respectively.
CEB Chairperson Dr. Tilak Siyambalapitiya was not available for comment.
Former Secretary to the Ministry of Power and Energy Dr. Sulakshana Jayawardena, told The Daily Morning early last month that the CEB was assessing the necessary data for an electricity tariff revision at the time. The terms of the former PUCSL's former Chairperson Prof. Manjula Fernando, Deputy Chairperson Chathurika Wijesinghe, and Members/Commissioners Douglas Nanayakkara, Sellampola Gedara Senarathna and Ranjith Kaluthanthrige ended on 17 July.
