The Cabinet has approved amendments to the Motor Vehicles Act to facilitate the registration of battery-powered electric three-wheelers with higher weight limits.
The decision follows requests from local manufacturers and conversion industry stakeholders, who highlighted the need for heavier battery packs to support long-range travel and air conditioning systems.
Previously, the maximum net weight for three-wheelers was limited to 600 kilograms (kg), but this amendment will allow for an increased limit of up to 650kg.
The move aims to address technical challenges arising from the transition to electric vehicles and promote sustainable transport options in Sri Lanka.
