Thushara Cooray’s landmark in scoring

07 Feb 2025

The second and final Test between Sri Lanka and Australia in the Warne-Muralitharan series, which began at the Galle International Cricket Stadium yesterday (6), marked a significant chapter in the career of Sri Lanka’s official cricket scorer Thushara Cooray.

The Test was the 100th international in Cooray’s career, having made his bow in the arena back in 1987, when Sri Lanka played against New Zealand at CCC grounds, Maitland Crescent.

In that Test the Black Caps were led by Jeff Crowe, and 38 years down the road, in Cooray’s 100th Test as an international scorer, the former Kiwi cricketer happens to be the ICC Match Referee for the ongoing series.

Cooray, besides being Sri Lanka Cricket’s official scorer, has also served a few leading first-class clubs, as well as schools such as Royal and S. Thomas’, with him being the latter’s statistician and scorer.

The Daily Morning Sports wishes Thushara Cooray many more years of scoring for his country as he continues his journey in his chosen field.
